内容記述 Because of globalization these days, the number of children with roots from foreign countries who have the need to learn Japanese as a second language is increasing in Japan. Japanese schools accept them if their parents want them to go to school, but the ways of accepting and teaching them are left to the local authorities, schools, and the teachers who are put in charge of them. In the areas where many foreign children live, schools and teachers have developed their educational methods accordingly. But in the areas where there are few foreign children, most schools and teachers are not accustomed to teaching them, and both teachers and children face various kinds of challenges. The aim of this research is to study the functions of Japanese as a second language program at an elementary school in an area where there are few foreign children. This research consists of 5 parts as follows: 1) observation of JSL classes, 2) interviews of JSL teachers, 3) observation of the school life of foreign children in their regular classrooms, 4) interviews of their classroom teachers, and 5) questionnaires to all teachers of the school. They showed that JSL classes have various kinds of important functions for the school life of foreign children as follows : 1) JSL teachers teach not only "language for social life" but also "language for learning" in school, 2) JSL teachers help foreign children to learn more directly other subjects in their regular classrooms, 3) JSL classes play the part of an anchor point of foreign children where they can express themselves naturally and enjoy learning and playing with other foreign children, 4) through the JSL program, the JSL teachers provide advice and support for classroom teachers, both formally and informally, 5) through the JSL program, the JSL teachers help parents of foreign children to understand Japanese school life, and intermediate between parents and regular classroom teachers.
