| 内容記述 | Of the multifunctional usages of the Chinese verb “gei” , this paper examines apparently causative constructions in terms of the verbs of the caused event. The lexically reflexive verbs, initially proposed in Japanese linguistics, are known to allow causative-like constructions with “gei” in Chinese. These verbs are divided into two classes: the pure reflexives vs. non-reflexive verbs with reflexive usage, which is precluded by “gei” as the marker of the indirect object. Substitution of “gei” with the beneficiary marker “wei” results in ambiguity between reflexive and non-reflexive readings of non-reflexive verbs. Examination of corpus data shows that “gei” , unlike other causative markers, occurs only with verbs of lower transitivity including reflexives. |
